The office will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.

This is an orientation for PreK parents.
• It is not appropriate for the students to attend.

Summer Reading 2013-2014

Summer is the time to take a break and rejuvenate, but it can also be a time where students fall out of the routine of reading.

Summer Reading is an important activity to keep students learning and growing during the break.

In order to simplify our program for Summer Reading, a few changes have been made.

Students going into grades 2-8 will no longer be given specific titles to read. Instead, a point requirement will be made. This will allow students to read more of the books that interest them.

These students will be graded by the amount of AR points that they obtain out of the amount that is required. As an added bonus, any points obtained that exceed the Summer Reading requirement will be added to the first quarter!

Students (grades 2-8) may read whatever book they choose as long as:
* it meets grade level requirements, and
* the student has never taken a test on the book before.

Students in grade 1 will be given specific titles to read because they are not familiar with the AR program yet.

Kindergarten—
No required reading list

First Grade—
Students entering First Grade must read all three of the following books before the first day of school:

2013-2014 Uniform Information

St. Joseph School uniforms (except for shoes) may be purchased at The Old School in Hammond.
The store has a complete list of the correct uniforms for St. Joseph School.

THE OLD SCHOOL Hammond—

All students attending St. Joseph School must wear the appropriate uniform daily beginning with the first day and throughout each school day until the closing of school except for announced days.

SHOES
All students in grades 1-8 will wear a solid black (NO MESH - NO REFLECTIVE LOGOS - NO SUEDE PARTS), leather, laced, tennis shoe.
These shoes must have a non-marking sole.
Shoes must not cover the ankle.
The New Balance Cross Trainer (available at Perfectly Fit and Academy in Hammond as well as other outlets) is recommended but not required.

PreK and Kindergarten boys will wear the solid black, leather (NO MESH - NO REFLECTIVE LOGOS - NO SUEDE PARTS), Velcro tennis shoes with the non-marking soles.
The New Balance Cross Trainer (available at Perfectly Fit in Hammond) is recommended.

PreK and Kindergarten girls wear navy Mary Jane-style shoes with non-marking soles which are closed with Velcro.

There is no specific vendor for shoes for either boys or girls.

We hope this shoe choice makes it easier for parents to keep the students in the correct shoes all year long.

HAIR
Hair is to be well-groomed and not unusual in style. Hair is to be of the natural color.
Girls - Hair accessories are to be simple and not distractive. Hair accessories are to match the school uniform with holiday exceptions. Hair may not be longer than the eyebrows in front.
Boys - Hair may not touch the collar in the back and the full ear must be visible on the sides without pulling the hair behind the ears. Hair may not be longer than the eyebrows in front.

MAKEUP and JEWELRY                                                                                                                                 Girls are allowed to wear one pair of stud earrings in the ear lobe. Boys are not allowed to wear earrings.
One standard-type watch may be worn.
One conservative ring may be worn.
One religious medal or cross on a chain or cord may be worn.
A simple religious bracelet may be worn.
Students are not to wear makeup or nail polish. As a privilege, girls in Eighth Grade may wear very light makeup and nail ppolish or a neutral color. 
No eye makeup or artificial nails may be worn.

OUTERWEAR/COLD WEATHER WEAR                                                                                                      Jacket - lined solid navy blue hooded nylon jacket imprinted with school logo.
Sweatshirt - wold navy blue sweatshirt imprinted with the school logo - with or without hood.
Sweaters - solid navy blue, button front.
NO OTHER OUTERWEAR WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE WORN IN THE CLASSROOMS OR HALLWAYS.
Girls may wear white or navy blue tights during cold weather. They may also wear navy blue leggings (not sweat pants) with crew socks during cold weather.
